In a context where QR codes are increasingly used to simplify payments and access to information, some fraudsters are exploiting this trend to deceive their victims.

Various fraud scenarios

Recent attempts have been observed, in particular, based on:

  • sending fraudulent letters inviting recipients to scan a QR code (fake bank card to activate, fake fines or communications impersonating official organisations);
  • placing fake QR codes on public equipment such as parking meters or electric vehicle charging stations;
  • fraudulent posters in certain locations, offering participation in make-believe competitions.

Potentially serious consequences

Scanning these QR codes can lead to:

  • a bank website spoofing, with a request to enter confidential information;
  • the installation of malware allowing the retrieval of sensitive data and facilitating subsequent fraud.

The right steps to take

Faced with these attempts, we recommend you:

  • not to scan QR codes whose origin is not clearly identified;
  • to carefully check the address of the website to which you are redirected;
  • to never transmit sensitive information after scanning;
  • if in doubt, to refrain from proceeding and use official channels.

Prevention remains the best way to protect yourself against fraud.
