How to protect yourself against phishing

How to protect yourself against phishing
Phishing attacks are significantly on the rise. But how can you protect yourself? Here are the right precautions to take.

In 2018, three times more people fell victim to phishing than in 20171. What is more, fraudsters have developed new techniques. Phishing attempts no longer merely involve generic emails, but now use personalised messages that can also appear in the form of a notification. This is due to the vast amount of personal information available online, especially social media websites.

Criminals take advantage of this data to try to make you either curious or worried. The messages that pique your curiosity generally involve a surprise gain or gift, while the messages that get you worried often refer to bank accounts. Ironically, phishers will try to make you believe that an unusual transaction has taken place on your account, in order to collect your login details and then debit money from your account.

What happens in a phishing attack?

Many different types of phishing attacks exist, but they all share certain characteristics that identify them as a fraud attempt2:

  • Although the pretence may vary, an attempt to obtain personal information is always involved (ID number, password, bank details, etc.).
  • The message generally contains a fake link to a spoofed website.
  • Fraudsters claim to be a known financial institution, electronic messaging service or government agency.

What steps can you take to protect yourself from phishing?

In response to the characteristics of phishing attacks, here are the right precautions to take:

  • Never divulge your password or other security information. No legitimate organisation will ever ask you for this type of information, either by email or over the phone.
  • Never use a link contained in an email to log in to your online banking service and always check that your connection is secure.
  • If you have the slightest doubt, don’t hesitate to contact your bank advisor or the organisation in question to check that the message is genuine.

You can also help in the fight against phishing by reporting fraud attempts on the website antiphishing.ch.
